Here's an interesting article from the Chicago Tribune that I found on Footnote.

It's the strange tale of Thomas J McGeoghan who was reportedly sent a note "with the significant signature of a skull and crossbones" following an ill-advised speech in Shelbyville, Kentucky.
You have to wonder how much of this was fueled by anti-Irish sentiment that seemed common in the 19th century in parts of the US.
The New York Times has two contemporary articles discussing the "Independent American Catholic Church." Here's one and here's the other.
